Does BLOOMBase Work With Buttercream?

Does BLOOMBase Work With Buttercream?

A real cake test with The Flowering Baker

When cake designers first see the flowering cake tier, one of the first questions is usually very practical:

“Can you ice it like a normal tier?”

The short answer is yes.

It was designed to work exactly like a standard display tier for a single event. I.e no special preparation, no priming and no unusual techniques required.

But of course, don't just take my word for it - the best proof always comes from seeing how real cake artists use it.

ENTER: THE FLOWERING BAKER

The Flowering Baker was one of the very first studios to incorporate BLOOMBase into their work.

If you know Ziggy’s cakes, the fit makes perfect sense. Her studio is rooted in nature, seasonality and floral artistry. She's known especially for her signature hand-piped buttercream flowers which are absolutely beautiful. Alongside designing luxury wedding cakes, she also teaches cake professionals through her buttercream flower courses.

In other words, this is someone whose work literally teaches artistry.

So when she decided to integrate a BLOOMBase into one of her own designs, we were very curious to see what would happen.

ICED JUST LIKE A NORMAL TIER

The BLOOMBase was stacked seamlessly into the cake.

No special preparation.
No priming.
No different icing method.

It was simply iced as normal using buttercream and incorporated into the design. It was even compatible with her Cake Compass icing aid (another innovative product we celebrate!).

The inspiration for the cake was a romantic garden in full flourish - think heaps of buttercream florals cascading around each tier, balancing structure and sharp lines with organic movement and romantic vibes.

The result?

The BLOOMBase sat quietly within the stack, completely integrated into the overall design.

Exactly as it was intended to.

DESIGNED FOR EVENTS — BUT STRONGER THAN YOU THINK

I get asked all the time if the BLOOMbase is multi-use. My official answer is that BLOOMBase tiers are designed for single event use, to be gifted to the client as part of a premium aftercare experience.

That means they’re intended to hold their structure throughout a wedding day, then be planted afterwards. Voila.

But interestingly, this particular cake ended up being used across two weekends in two separate wedding shows - and it held up beautifully.

So while the design philosophy is very much “single celebration, then plant it”, it is great to see that in practice they can still hold up for real-world needs too.

WHAT IT MEANS FOR CAKE DESIGNERS

For cake professionals, the key takeaway is simple: If you can ice a standard display tier, you can ice a BLOOMBase. No new techniques. No new equipment. Just design as you normally would.

Because ultimately, this isn’t about replacing how you work. It’s about giving designers a new ingredient to play with!

THIS IS THE FUTURE OF WEDDING CAKES

The most exciting thing about BLOOMBase is seeing how different studios interpret it. And we can’t wait to see what you create next. Would you like to be featured here?
