"Does it actually decorate like a normal tier? How do I ice a BLOOMbase?
We get a lot of questions about our BLOOMbase flowering cake tier. And this one keeps coming up, especially from wedding cake professionals who are curious but not quite sure yet.
This time, we wanted to show you properly. A full tutorial, filmed with one of the most talented wedding cake artists we know.
MEET ZIGGY: THE FLOWERING BAKER
If you don't already follow The Flowering Baker, stop reading and go fix that.
Ziggy is a Midlands-based luxury wedding cake designer whose work sits at the intersection of nature and craft. She's known for her hand-piped buttercream flowers - intricate, layered, so impossibly beautiful. They honestly don't look like buttercream.
She also teaches her technique to other cake professionals through her buttercream flower courses, which tells you everything about her generosity as a creator and her depth of skill as an artist. Of course she was willing to help us teach you how to decorate a Made With Flower BLOOMBase!
THE TUTORIAL: WHAT ZIGGY ACTUALLY DID
Watch the full video above. But here's the short version.
Ziggy decorated a BloomBase tier in buttercream, exactly as she would a standard dummy tier. Same tools. Same technique. Same process.
She used her Prop Options Cake Compass icing aid to hold it steady - just pre-pierce the BLOOMbase with a knife, or pointed tool before inserting the Cake Compass pins.
The finished tier sat inside a stacked cake design and disappeared into it completely. Which is exactly the point. It should look like every other tier. The magic happens later.
TECHNICAL NOTES FOR CAKE PROFESSIONALS
The BLOOMbase is built from FSC-certified fibreboard and is rigid and strong by design - we know it needs to hold structure through an entire wedding day. You don't need to worry about it collapsing, even when iced. As we mentioned in the video - Ziggy's display tier has been iced for over 2 months now with no deterioration. Yes, 2 MONTHS.
The BLOOMBase is NOT plastic or polystyrene, which means that if you're pressing in pins or picks, you'll want to pre-pierce the surface first with a knife, gimlet or similar tool. Think of it the same way you'd score a surface before working into it.
WHY THIS MATTERS FOR YOUR CAKE BUSINESS
So, if you're a cake professional considering BloomBase, here's the practical case.
- You don't need new skills or new equipment
- It's compatible with standard icing aids including Cake Compass
- It works with buttercream, fondant and royal icing
- It integrates into existing stacked cake builds
- It gives you a story to tell clients that no standard dummy tier can
- That last point matters more than it might seem.
Couples are increasingly looking for weddings that mean something beyond the day. A cake that becomes wildflowers is a detail that brings more value.
It's a detail that justifies your premium pricing and elevates your studio's positioning - all without changing how you work.
